Blog Entry: Induction by Gameshow! PDF Print E-mail

Taken from Judys Blog

Andy and Corrinne from Oldham Sixth Form College gave a brilliant presentation at the RSC Northwest event last week showing how they have converted the death by PowerPoint induction into an animated and engaging Gameshow. They catch the imagination by dropping the lights in the lecture theatre, flashing coloured lights and brining in a theme tune. At this point learners have just been listening to the Principal's welcome and are left wondering what will happen next. At this point Andy emerges and introduces himself and his team. In true Gameshow style questions are randomly selected and a seat number in the audience too, this is the person who has to ask the question. Each question is answered by a combination of audio and video, frequently making use of current humour and music. Andy says he tries to keep the content relevant and up to date for the 16-18 audience. The result of this, found from learner surveys, is better retention of the information given in this induction session. Learners feel more involved and this seems to help them retain the info far better. We allknowinduction can be a point of serious information overload for learners, so this seems to be a good way to break this up.
