IDevice Icon Best wishes Jonathan

Image of Jonnathan DayJonathan Day, RSC Northwest's former Manager, said goodbye to the delegates at our Conference in Blackpool on the 29th June 2007.

In his words...

"I have been RSC Northwest's Manager for seven years and have seen the RSC grow from 3 people to 11 and it's still growing. It has been a challenging job but one which has been very rewarding and I feel privileged to have been part of the RSC success story."

"Whilst I am looking forward to my new job as project manager at Lancaster University, I cannot help feel somewhat emotional as I will be leaving a fantastic community where I have made some wonderful friendships over the years."

"I wish you all the very best as you move into the next phase of the RSCs history."

We are sure that Learning Providers across the Northwest would join us in wishing Jonathan good luck and success in his new post.

Engaging Black and Minority Ethnic adult learners in museum and gallery education

Thursday 20 September 2007

Venue: Merseyside Maritime Museum <http://www.liverpoolmuseums.org.uk/maritime/ >, Albert Dock, Liverpool L3 4AQ

This partnership conference between NIACE and National Museums Liverpool will take place as part of the national commemoration of the abolition of the slave trade (200 years). It will:

  • centre on good and effective practice and there will be opportunities for participants to take ideas and resources back to their places of work
  • illustrate the power of museums as unique learning resources with artefacts and archival materials which can stimulate an interest in learning, particularly with regard to family history and the development of communities, towns and cities
  • focus on including non-traditional learning in education programmes delivered from museums, libraries and archives
  • focus on black history and how this can be used as a touchstone to encourage non-traditional learners to participate in education programmes delivered from museums, libraries and archives.

The conference aims:

  • To explore the unique potential that museums and galleries have, and how this could be harnessed to attract more black and minority ethnic adult learners
  • To take advantage of education programmes
  • To examine some of the reasons why adults form certain minority groups do not take advantage of museums and galleries
  • To commemorate 200 years since the abolition of the slave trade
  • To share best practice and network
  • To illustrate the importance and power of partnerships and how effectively working with community based organisations can be a good way to encourage and engage BME adults in museum and gallery education.

Participants will have the opportunity to network, share best practice and participate in workshops and have a guided tour around the new International Slavery Museum.

The event will be of particular interest to:

Museum, library and gallery educators, VCS, Local Authorities, MLA partnership staff, policy makers and various partnerships including those working with black and minority ethnic learners.

The conference will emphasis the importance of partnerships, particularly with the Voluntary Community Sector, Local Authorities, Colleges and universities, as such it will be appropriate for those engaged in adult education across all sectors. It will also be relevant for policy makers and those in organisations supporting adult education such as Connexions, Jobcentre Plus etc.

Arrival and Registration is at 9.15am. The conference ends at 3.45pm.

Conference Fee: £98 (The fee includes lunch, tea/coffee)

Dr Geoff Foot (Programme manager e-learning and technology, Learning and Skills Network)

email:annoying habits...

blue @ symbols

Five annoying e-mail habits (what we can do about them!).

  1. Vague or nonexistent subject line
Make it easy for recipients to know what your message is about. If you're like most people, you have an in-basket that summarizes your incoming messages, probably by date, sender, and subject. Isn't it wonderful when you can get the information you need simply from the subject line? The sender has made it easy for you and has saved you time.

  2. Changing the topic without changing the subject
E-mail users do this all too often, usually out of laziness.
e.g. you send a note to a colleague about subject 1. That colleague later needs to send a note to you on subject 2. However, instead of creating a new email, labeling it "subject 2," he/she simply replies to you, discusses subject 2, but keeps the subject line as "subject 1."
    Annoying, isn't it?
When you send e-mail, make sure the subject line matches the actual subject. If you're going to send a note via a reply, change the subject line to match the actual subject.

  3. Including multiple subjects in one email
Covering multiple topics in one email involves less sending and hence less e-mail traffic and volume. However, your recipient might overlook one or more of those topics. It's better to keep to one topic per message.

  4. Sending before thinking
When you were small, your mum probably told you to count to ten before responding to someone. Why did she say that? She knew that answering before thinking can lead to problems.
Make sure you really mean to say what you've written. People can interpret your words differently from what you meant. A statement made in jest to someone via e-mail may have a greater chance of being misinterpreted than one made in person (you could consider WaxMail: http://www.waxmail.biz/ ). Also, be careful about reacting and replying too quickly to an e-mail that upsets you.
Legal implications offer another reason to think before sending. E-mail can be subject to "discovery" ("The compulsory disclosure of pertinent facts or documents to the opposing party in a civil action, usually before a trial begins.") by lawyers for a party that might be suing your employer. That is, the things you write in your e-mail could end up in the hands of those lawyers and could be used as evidence against your company in a trial. So before you send an e-mail, imagine that you're on a witness stand having to explain it.

  5. Inadvertent replying to all
Before hitting Reply To All, make sure you really need to do so. Does everyone need to see your response? Does your response benefit everyone else? Or are you sending merely a private response or addressing a personal issue with the sender? In these situations, it's better just to do a simple Reply. Otherwise, a private disagreement becomes public (and embarrassing) knowledge.
Be aware that if you receive a message because you're part of certain message groups (e.g., a JISCmail group), your reply might go to everyone in the group even if you just hit Reply.

Do you recognize yourself in any of these mistakes?

The good news is that once you recognize these issues, it's easy to address them.

Innovation Reports

Some of you may find it useful to visit http://www.eep-edu.org/innservice/InnReports_start.htm ;European Education Partnership (E.E.P) Innovation Reports are very brief reports of new innovations in ICT for learning.

For example Report 208: -

"Content or context?"

'Content' for learning means very different things to different people. The Sharable Content Object Reference Model (SCORM) is derived from a particular view of digital content - that of a sequence of digital 'learning objects' that learners can independently interact with.

Content that a teacher might use on an interactive whiteboard, in blended multi-modal approaches to teaching/learning provides a different view of 'content', as does content used to stimulate creative activity.

Good Practice: Business & Management

IDevice Icon Online learning through a VLE...

Image of clouds with text Wirral Metropolitan College and a blue and yellow ellipse with WirralMet over it

After having successfully completed Sheffield College's LeTTOL (Learning to Teach Online) course in 2006 Business & Management tutor, Val Pallister realised that online learning through a VLE was an ideal way to support her OCR Higher Diploma in Administrative Procedures (HDAP) students. So, early in 2007 Val attended a short staff development session and started Moodling and in March the HDAP resource was launched in our Virtual Campus.

HDAP students are adult learners with ages ranging from 18 to 45, all with good levels of IT literacy. Part time students on the evening course are mostly employed as admin staff, PAs, senior administrators (with the remainder aspiring to post).

Various types of resources are available through the Virtual Campus including essential course administration documents such as the course standards, evidence recording sheets, checklists, etc.

Helen Cheers, an HDAP Student, said

"You can see exactly what is needed for each individual unit, and having the standards of the course available is a great help."

In addition to admin documents Val has added...

  • a wide range of learning relevant resources including handouts,
  • preparatory reading and links to websites for preparation or extension activities,
  • interactive quizzes and activities,
  • NLN (National Learning Network) materials,
  • working examples of cash flows, spreadsheets, etc.

HDAP Student, Claire Murray commented on how useful she found Virtual Campus;

"I had used the Virtual Campus for my Unit 2 - Diary Management. My tutor, Val had put on an exercise in scheduling a diary. 2 weeks after completing this I had a job interview in which I had to schedule a diary within a time limit. I felt that the exercise on the Virtual Campus had really helped and I scored 100% in the interview, and got the job as a Diary Scheduler."

Val says

"The resource has only been on 3 months but has been a great success! Having Virtual Campus enhances my students' learning by making it so much more flexible - students who work full-time and have to attend 2 nights a week are often absent for work reasons (e.g. working away, evening events, meetings, etc.) The Virtual Campus gives them the chance to catch up before the next session which takes a lot of pressure off them.

It also helps my teaching as all my resources are in one place and I can use the interactive whiteboard/RM Tutor for demonstrations, as a base for discussion, step-by-step guides, show web sites, etc. Students are able to access the resources and the various activities in their own time and at their own pace which supports differentiation, and is flexible enough to accommodate their different learning styles, e.g. theorists and reflectors can go back and look again, or more deeply, at the subject."

The plan for next year is to develop the resource further to include communication facilities such as online discussion forums so that students can keep-in touch and support each other whilst outside college. Val can use it to support students, answer questions and set group activities and assignments. This will provide additional flexibility meaning that evening students only need attend college one night a week. Val also would also like to be able to include access to the e-portfolio facility planned for next year.

There are also plans to set up two new areas on Virtual Campus for the NVQ Level 2 & 3 Administration courses.

Val says

"The EV was shown the work in progress and mentioned it in his report as fantastic! It will be used to enable students to complete the underpinning knowledge and understanding for their units by taking part in activities and quizzes. A forum would also be good to enable them to keep in contact whilst on their long work placements."

Jonathan Day, from the RSC Northwest says

"Virtual Learning Environments (VLEs) are a fantastic tool for providing students with additional help and support and this is clearly demonstrated by this innovative use of Moodle at Wirral Metropolitan College. It is clear to see that the technology is being used effectively to provide extended support to part-time learners where it can be difficult to maintain the participation of all students due to external pressures such as work. It is heartening to see how there is a clear identification of the “E-learning advantage” and ideas for how the VLE can be further utilized to enhance the learner experience. Well done and keep up the excellent work.

"Green" Initiative To Explore ‘Thin Client’ Computing

IDevice Icon The Government has...
Image MDDA, Manchester Digital Development Agency...put in place plans to establish an environmentally friendly model of computing aimed at local authorities, households, and small businesses and has asked Manchester City Council to take the lead.

The Green Shift initiative, made up of at least eight local authorities and their partners, proposes a "thin client" computing model and will be led by the council's Manchester Digital Development Agency (MDDA - http://www.manchesterdda.com/ ).

Image Digital Challenge with 10 squares in a pattern

The group was chosen from finalists of the Digital Challenge competition
( http://www.digitalchallenge.gov.uk/ ),

the "DC-10," launched by the Government last year to combat digital exclusion and enhance public sector innovation.

While the technology may be adapted from traditional thin client models, the programme will see all computer functions, such as Microsoft Office applications, email and the internet delivered to the user from data centres via broadband. Users will receive applications via a small box similar to a digital TV set top box, rather than by traditional computer ‘towers.' The scheme's green credentials may be further boosted by plans to use renewable energy to power data centres.

The Green Shift model would use 75 per cent fewer resources in production and 98 per cent less energy in operation.

While pilots to take place within local authority departments are currently under discussion, a pilot will begin next year with 10-100 households and in 2009, the initiative will widen to include households across the country. An advisor to the MDDA Atul Hatwal said "The idea is to do small scale operational testing next year then look at a bigger pilot, looking at the impact on behaviour up and down the country,".

Government ministers will receive regular reports from the taskforce as plans progress. "Before we get to piloting, the work done by the taskforce will feed into policymaking," said Hatwal.

Image It's time to act, Act on CO2 CalculatorMeanwhile, Environment Secretary David Miliband this week launched an online calculator ( http://www.direct.gov.uk/actonCO2 ) allowing the public to work out their carbon use based on home energy, home appliances and transport use. The calculator develops a personalised action plan including measures they can take to reduce their emissions.

Missing the football?

Need a holiday?

Image: Collage showing images from Sonoma Vally in San FranciscoWe are constantly being told that it is important for all of us to use our holiday entitlement.

I can see that. That's what holidays are there for, after all.

However I have yet to take a break (for a week or longer) that I didn't have to painstakingly work ahead of and frantically catch up on afterwards.

Where's the stress relief in that?

Dr. Cathy McCarty tells us "Vacations provide a break from everyday stressors. They allow us time away from work or home and help us release built-up tension."

Unless, of course, you're driving to your holiday destination with a wife/husband who feels she/he has to beat some personal trip-time record, and/or cranky children ('Are we there yet?') or chronologically enhanced relatives requiring hourly toilet breaks and/or repeating conversations (often held years ago!). Oh, was that out loud?

I'm just saying that...

  • ...any holiday involving children and/or chronologically enhanced relatives is not going to be restful.
  • ...having to take holidays at times when all families are taking their holidays is far from restful and more expensive as well! We are just substituting a different kind of stress.
Maybe that's the secret - you give one part of your nervous system a rest while you put an different part through the ringer.

Dr. McCarty also said this: "This study proves vacations are good for your mental health and may help you do a better job at work," McCarty said. "Employers should be supportive of time off because they benefit from having relaxed, happy employees." I love how the study throws out this recommendation, as if it's doable.

Obviously, the good doctor never worked in the Post-16 Learning provider sector. Call me cynical, but I really don't see a Head of Service/Principal/etc. having a clear preference when presented with the choice between a happy, relaxed employee and one who is skating along on one last frayed nerve, if the teaching & learning output is the same. And any kind of difference in teaching & learning outputs between the two would be nearly impossible to prove.

Since nearly everyone's work influences or depends on someone else's, I'm not sure how a learning provider could even go about "being supportive of employee time off." What are your suggestions?

Teaching is a lot Like Cooking!

Image: 4 pictures with text Wiki, PDA, Blog Camera, eXe mp3 Player, Podcast and Mobile Phone over the topWhen you are first learning to cook, following a recipe can be a sensible way to begin. After you have been at it long enough though, you begin to learn the underlying basics that make the recipes work and become less reliant on them.

Eventually, you get to a point of mastery where you can just walk into your local shops, market and/or super store, see what looks good and fresh, and build your menu on the spot.

Great cooks still investigate the latest recipes but they use them as inspiration and not as exact algorithms.

I look at the latest technology, hardware and software in the same way. If I get the opportunity I...

  • search the internet
  • read reviews,
  • discover appropriate uses, for both learning and teaching,
  • acquire, beg, borrow, download etc.,

so that I can...

  • experiment, (like cooking, hands-on is important)
  • work through tutorials,
  • be creative
Find the time to do this and eventually you start to see the 'eLearning Advantages' and the vast potential of the eLearning 'ingredients'.

Master the basics, and like a great cook preparing an amazing meal with just the ingredients on hand, you can apply them appropriately, in teaching and learning with positive results.

At that stage you have reached eMaturity!

Apple: Anti-RSI

IDevice Icon AntiRSI

Image showing microbreak clockAntiRSI is a program for Mac OS X that helps prevent RSI (repetitive strain injury) and other computer related stress. It does so by forcing you to take regular breaks, yet without getting in the way. It also detects natural breaks so it won't force too many breaks on you.

Every four minutes it reminds you to take your hands off the computer for a micro break of a thirteen seconds and every fifty minutes it reminds you to take a ten minute break.

Taking your hands off the keyboard/mouse (so you don't accidentally move the pointer) whenever you pause to think however, will reset the micro break counter and reduce the number of forced breaks.

Users have found that after using the program for about 2 weeks, they find it rarely interrupts them for a micro break anymore because they naturally take them.

Community wireless in St Helens

IDevice Icon An innovative project

The challenge of delivering ICT services in a controlled fashion to disadvantaged homes has led to an innovative project in St Helens.

The project is a collaboration between partners such as the University of Liverpool and St Cuthbert's Catholic Community College of Business and Enterprise . It uses wireless links from the school to connect to thin client systems in homes. The system hopes to provide parents and other users with school and community information online.

Although Thin Clients won't work should the network fail and suffer when the quality of connection drops, the units themselves are reliable, relatively cheap, easy to manage and unattractive to thieves.

Social Software

IDevice Icon New Research

Image hit wise An Experian CompanyA new report by research company hit-wise has highlighted trends in using social software and user created content.

The report found that users of web 2.0 have followed similar usage patterns to established internet community usage, such as newsgroups and forums, with the vast majority of people reading, but not contributing to the content.

It is estimated that for most sites that encourage user contribution, about 1 per cent of the users actually added content.

Find out more at http://www.hitwise.com

Usability expert Jakob Nielsen has criticised some of the current trends in web development.

He has compared the fashion for personalisation and social networking, loosely termed Web 2.0, to the dotcom boom, when style was favoured over usability.

Citing the results of the hitwise survey, Mr Neilsen...

  • questioned the desire by many sites to offer user created content, when the majority of users want simply to view content.
  • advised companies
    • to get the basics of design right before looking into Web 2.0 functionality and
    • to be careful about targeting teenagers over other groups of users.

Browser Keyboard Shortcuts

IDevice Icon Saving time with the 'new' IE7
"Getting to terms with IE7 and 'Tabs', isn't proving to be straight forward.
I know you love shortcuts so, have you any to help browse using IE7?"
I find that taking a little time to learn 'keyboard shortcuts', to control common functions, can save you a surprising amount of time. Below are some of the most useful shortcuts to try...
Note: I had a play with Firefox, Flock and Opera just to check if there were any differences.

Image of Ctrl key and T key

Opens a new Tab

Image of Ctrl key and W key

Close the current Tab

Image of Ctrl key, Shift Key and T key

Reopen closed tab (not in IE7 or Flock)

Image of Ctrl key and L key

Jump to the address bar (in IE7 the Open dialog box is launched)

Image of Ctrl key and F key

The Find dialog box opens (helps you find specific words on current page)

Image of Ctrl key and D key

Bookmark page; the Add a Favorite dialog box opens

Image of F5 key

Refresh or reload the current page (essential for 'live data' e.g. share prices; ship movements etc)

Image of Space Bar

(Spacebar) moves the current page down, one page.

Image of Ctrl key and Space Bar

Moves the current page up, one page.

Browser Tabs

IDevice Icon Tabs: Keyboard Shortcuts IE7
"Shortcuts for navigating open Tabs in IE7 would be useful as well!"

Below are the three I've found out about...

Image of Ctrl key and Tab key

Will move to the Tab on the right of the tab currently selected.

Note: - If you continue to repeat Ctrl + Tab, when you get to the last tab, it will then start again at the first tab!

Image of Ctrl key, Shift Key and Tab key

Will move to the Tab on the left of the Tab currently selected

Note: - If you continue to repeat Ctrl + Shift + Tab, when you get to the first tab, it will then start again at the last tab!

Image of Ctrl key, 1 key and 9 key

Will move to the selected 'numbered' tab (counting from the left) e.g. Ctrl + 3 will move you to the third tab; Ctrl + 1 to the first tab.

Note: - I think this is the most useful of the three shortcuts!

Spell check in Outlook

IDevice Icon I sometimes forget!

"When I'm in a hurry, that's most of the time, I often forget to spell check emails that I send out. Is there a way I can get the spell check to run automatically before I send?"

Outlook 2003 can be made to automatically spell check all outgoing e-mails before sending. With the following tip, you and/or your learners can force this to occur before you send out composed email messages:

Note: you will only know it is working if there is a spelling error; to test it is set up correctly send an email with spelling errors!

  • Click Tools.

  • Select Options.

  • Select the Spelling tab.

  • Check Always check spelling before sending. (there will be a green tick as shown)

  • Click Apply

  • Click OK
Note: you may have to close and reopen Outlook for the change to take effect.

View as a Film Strip

IDevice Icon Why isn't this option always available?

"When I open the My Pictures folder, I can select Filmstrip on the View menu to browse through the images. However I have photos and artworks stored in other folders; often, in these folders, Filmstrip isn't in the View menu."

"Is there a way round this?"

You will be pleased to know there is a quick fix...

  • When Filmstrip isn't available in the View drop-down menu...
Image showing that Filmstrip isn't available
  • Select the View menu then...
  • Customise This Folder...

  • From the drop-down template list select either...
    • Pictures [best for many files] or
    • Photo Album [best for fewer files]
  • ...in this example I've chosen Pictures (I find this is usually the better option)

  • Click Apply then
  • OK

British sculptor Antony Gormley's official website has been remodelled <http://www.antonygormley.com/newsite/home.html>

It now provides...

  • complete photographic guides to all his major projects
  • a check on his current ventures in the 'Works in Progress' section
I have a particular affection for the Another Place http://www.antonygormley.com/newsite/viewproject.php?projectid=13&page=2 now a permanent installation here at Crosby Beach, Merseyside UK.

Art: Jason Taylor

Images of steel and concrete figures

Although it is unlikely many of us will be able to visit Jason Taylor's steel and concrete figures, on the seabed in Grenada, we can read about the concept, access an image gallery and watch a video on the project! Isn't Technology wonderful!

Go to http://www.underwatersculpture.com/ ; I wont say anymore or it will spoil the hauntingly beautiful experience.

Just one question, will the natural elements enhance or spoil the sculptures? In the case of Antony Gormley (see the previous useful resource) I do visit his sculptures on Crosby Beach, quite often, and, in my opinion, nature has and continues to enhance the separate elements.

Celeb Science

Image: Science upd8

In a world obsessed with celebrities, many of us are influenced by their opinions on a wide range of subjects. But people in the public eye often promote theories and campaigns that make no scientific sense. Madonna, for example, wants to convince the nuclear industry that magic Kabbalah water can neutralise radioactive waste.

Through the context of radioactive waste disposal, this activity looks at why we should question the opinions of prominent personalities and gets students to consider whose opinions we should trust.

Becta: Technology can be a catalyst for education reform

IDevice Icon Becta's annual report
Image Becta British Educational Communications and Technology AgencyLaunch of Becta's annual report calls on education sector to follow industry's lead in technology.

Technology must be recognised and accepted as a catalyst for change in education, much the same way it has been in industry, according to Becta.

At the launch of the Becta's annual report , chairman Andrew Pinder said that the education sector must take on technology with the same leadership, drive and enthusiasm for change as industry.

"Throughout history technology has been the catalyst for change in industry," said Pinder. "If it can do that for industry, why can't it do the same for education?"

"Industry demands a skilled, educated and enthusiastic workforce, and one that is at home in using the latest technology," he said. "Our schools and colleges have a duty to ensure that demand is met."

Image The Youth Summit

Young people in England are increasingly feeling let down by and isolated from the older generation - this was one of the messages from the nation's youth, delivered by Young People's Minister, Parmjit Dhanda, at the first annual Youth Summit .

He also unveiled the new Department for Education and Skills' engagement strategy, with an action plan for involving the third sector, claiming that they will put the third sector at the heart of DfES business. The Third Sector Strategy & Action Plan can be downloaded here http://www.dfes.gov.uk/publications/pdf/7138-DfES-3rdSecS&APlan.pdf

The Youth Summit, organised by the National Youth Agency (NYA), involved around 300 key players in the youth sector, including Tom Wylie, chief executive of the NYA and Justice minister Bridget Prentice.

The DfES also commissioned the NYA to undertake 3 dialogue events across the country which enabled groups of up to 30 young people to discuss with Parmjit Dhanda the issues around the activities that they undertake.

A report on the events will be published in August 2007.

Headstar

Minister Moves Online To Seek Views Of Young People.

To help shape future policy on 13 to 19 year olds, the Department for Education and Skills (DfES) has launched an online campaign to seek the views of young people about their neighbourhoods and communities.

The campaign aims to attract young people to a blog and online discussion forum hosted by youth minister Parmjit Dhanda, while online polls and results will be published on a range of youth- orientated websites. The online campaign was discussed at a national Youth Summit, held on 25 June ( http://www.youthsummit.co.uk/ ), and will feed into future development of the Government's Youth Matters policy ( http://fastlink.headstar.com/youth1 ).

As well as learning more about issues that are important to young people, the campaign is an opportunity for the government to show young people that it values them, said Youth Minister Parmjit Dhanda in a prepared statement. "We don't just want to slap ASBOs on them - we want to give them a chance to release their potential and help them get involved in positive activities in their community. Overwhelmingly we find if you give young people the chance, they'll exceed your expectations," he said.

"It looks like a great step to try to use new technologies to reach out to young people," said Gez Smith, e-Democracy Consultant at Delib, an agency that develops products and strategies for consulting people online ( http://www.delib.co.uk/ ).
But it is important for the DfES campaign to avoid some common mistakes, said Smith. Chief among these is "thinking that just because it's on the web, young people will use it," said Smith. "What will they [DfES] be demonstrating will change as a result of this process and the feedback given? If nothing, then that's a real risk," he said.

The blog, hosted by Parmjit Dhanda, will be available through the Need2Know website ( http://www.need2know.co.uk/ ), while Dhanda's online discussion forum will be hosted by the Channel 4 Education website: http://www.4learning.co.uk/ .
