Open Source or Commercial?
There
are an ever growing number of open source and commercial ePortfolio
systems available. You might have an immediate preference for open
source or commercial, depending on a number of factors including
finances available and previous experience. Because there different
types of ePortfolios with different requirements and features, it is
essential that the choice of system is not based solely on the cost.
Commercial
Assessment ePortfolio systems are more likely to have a number of
templates available to meet the requirements of courses, which have
specific and rigid criteria. These are set up in such a way that evidence can be easily cross-referenced with the qualifications units and criteria. Although these can be added into some open
source systems, this may require a great deal of time and effort to set up.
Open Source systems may have a community of users and developers to offer support, however commercial systems are likely to have professional support system including help desk and on site support.
