Choosing an ePortfolio
There are a number of different interpretations of what an ePortfolio is and what it can do. This can lead to confusion when talking about ePortfolios and choosing a new ePortfolio system. The aim of this site is to clarify the different types of ePortfolio available and identify the questions to think about when choosing a new system.
What is an ePortfolio?
This may seem like a simple enough question, however the term ePortfolio covers a wide range of systems which have a wide range of uses.
"An e-portfolio is a purposeful aggregation of digital items - ideas, evidence, reflections, feedback etc. which 'presents' a selected audience with evidence of a person's learning and/or ability"
Sutherland, S. and Powell, A as cited in http://www.jisc.ac.uk/whatwedo/themes/elearning/eportfolios.aspx
This
broad definition covers such a wide range of systems, it is useful to
break them down into different types, depending on the intended
purpose, although it should be noted that many systems allow for a
combination of purposes.
