PhotoSoup

IDevice Icon Thanks to Nik Peachey...

PhotoSoup is a visual word puzzle generator that allows users to create word search puzzles with tag-photo pairs taken from Flickr

It generates wordsearch activities based on any topic in just seconds. Simply type in your topic and the site automatically generates a word grid and image clues. You then have 90 seconds to find all the words. You can get hints and even get it to show you the answers. ("Screen Capture potential" ALERT!)

Within Literacy (Key Skills) and or ESOL (is the kind of site that might have been custom made for language teaching)...

  • ...it has the potential to be used for vocabulary revision and/or introducing new vocabulary.
  • ...learners could be provided with a collection of vocabulary themes to work through on their own or in groups.

It looks great on an interactive whiteboard (IWB) and with a 'wireless mouse' can be used as a group exercise (musical mouse? Last one with the mouse when time is up)

Other advantages...

  • It's free
  • Each wordsearch it generates is pretty much unique
  • The timing adds an element of motivation and competition to it
  • It's  just so simple

Note: Nik Peachey (http://nikpeachey.blogspot.com/) tells us that he has tried a random selection of very unsuitable words that students might put in and it seems that those words are censored, so you don't have to worry so much about badly behaved students looking at unsuitable images.
