TiddlyWiki

TiddlyWiki, a popular free MicroContent WikiWikiWeb created by Jeremy Ruston and a busy Community of independent developers.

  • It's written in HTML, CSS and JavaScript to run on any modern browser without needing any ServerSide Logic (In many applications that's a great strength because it means that you can work with TiddlyWiki without having to be connected to the Internet or, because it's SelfContained, installing any software).
  • It allows anyone to create personal Self Contained hypertext documents that can be posted to a Web Server, sent by email or kept on a USB thumb drive to make a WikiOnAStick.
  • From a teaching point of view, it makes a great GuerillaWiki in situations where it's not practical to use a traditional wiki.
e.g. in a corporate setting, persuading an over-worked IT department to install you a Wiki server for you isn't always going to be possible overnight. And your PC is locked down so you can't install a conventional Wiki yourself. But, equally, you can't go and use one of the public hosted Wiki services because your Information Security department would not allow all that corporate data to flow into an outside server.
  • TiddlyWiki slices through barriers by being usable on virtually all PCs.
  • It is published under an OpenSourceLicense.

NOTE: - The word "wiki" is not an acronym but rather (according to Ward Cunningham, who coined the term)

"a Hawaiian word used as an alliterative substitute for quick, to avoid naming this software quick-Web."

The name has now entered the Internet lexicon, along with other Web-based terms such as blogs and podcasts.
