Steps 4-5-6

Step 4: Outcome Desired - Mission? - (Voluntarily imprecise) Statements of Purpose (SoP), overall task, ethic, vocation or policy Example: - "To provide, for our registered learners, 24/7 access to appropriate resources to support their learning";
Objective?
- Critical Difference in expected performance; how will you know the implementation is a success? what evidence will you need to collect?

Step 5: Deadline - By when do we want to be there? - Specifically?

Step 6: Action Steps - How will we get there? - Strategy? (Options/choice) Conscious choices as to how the mission (see Step 4) is to be fulfilled; e.g. operating options, areas of emphasis, decisions on methods, resources and direction, desires & constraints, etc.

Example: - "To convert the learning resources, currently used, into online, interactive resources that address the different learning styles of learners.
Objectives? Critical measurable differences between current practice and practice expected at the end of a given period. Example: - "To have the current resources for (course / staff/learner development / formative assessment / etc), available, for staff/learners, online 24/7 by dd/mm/yyyy"

IDevice Icon Setting a good objective

Image of How to set a good objective

Criteria...

  • Necessary - Represents a critical measurable differences between current practice and practice expected at the end of a given period.
  • Realistic - Is subjectively attainable (Manager/Doer)
  • Agreed -Has been agreed by Manager and Doer.

Components...

  • Result - To be achieved?
  • Deadline - By when, specifically?
  • Limits - Without...? Provided that...? (Constraints within which the objective must be achieved and 'excuses/reasons' which will make the objective null and void)

IDevice Icon Evidence Challenge

Image of Cunning Plan FailureTo check whether an objective has been well-formulated, ask the Evidence Challenge...

"What will we accept as evidence that we have succeeded?"

In fact, the answer to this question is the objective!
