You can indeed delete the account and if like you readers want to delete their account or, have an extra account that they don't use, they can delete that as well. It does mean that your Twitter ID becomes available for others to use.

• Go to Twitter and login to your account.
• In the upper-right corner, select Settings.
  
• Select the Accounts tab.
  
• Go to the bottom of the page and click the Delete my account link.
  
• When the confirmation dialog box appears, click the Okay, fine, delete my account button.
