Are there any Security Risks?
Skype, like most other network applications, has risks as well as benefits.
If Learning Providers are to empower their staff and learners to use the internet, as well as other on and offline technologies, positively, safely and effectively, it is important that those given the task of managing the network and technologies should do just that -manage the network and technologies - rather than taking the easy option and just say NO!
It is VERY IMPORTANT that those managing the network(s) and technologies are included in strategic groups that consider uNET (using New & Emerging Technologies) to enhance current practices.
Learning Providers should therefore consider how they manage Skype – to protect their own network availability and that of others, to ensure that filters for hostile and inappropriate material remain effective and to comply with the Acceptable Use Policy. There are a number of ways in which this can be done:
